E-Town company assembles Olympic rings at high altitude

A giant Olympic rings logo recently debuted at the top of a solar tower in the Yanqing competition area.

China Construction Second Bureau Installation Engineering Co., Ltd., an enterprise from the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area (BDA), undertook the construction of the project, adding color to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The project is located in Badaling town, Yanqing district, Beijing. The tower is inspired by ice sculptures. Steel structures and membrane structures were erected along the six sides of the tower's body to create a streamer that resembles ice and snow crystals. A giant three-dimensional Olympic rings logo with a height of 17 meters and a width of 38 meters was installed at the top of the tower.

"The landscape improvement project undertaken by our company is divided into five parts: five rings and base installation, streamer installation, ring beam reinforcement, landscape lighting and membrane structure installation, to create an ice crystal effect and an ice and snow atmosphere, showing the theme of the Winter Olympics," said project manager Wang Chong.

The company faced many challenges in installing the project. 

According to Wang, the five Olympic rings are composed of a body and a base. The hoisting height is over 120 meters and the total weight is over 160 tons. The total weight of the body is 55 tons, the outer diameter is 12 meters, and the inner diameter is 10 meters.

How to address safety risks? Wang said the project department set up a special building information modeling (BIM) team to simulate the optimal hoisting volume and weight under different wind conditions through 3D models so as to optimize the hoisting process.
