Fifteen new bird species recorded in Beijing E-Town

Updated: 2024-11-21

A survey has revealed that 15 new species of bird have made Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (Beijing E-Town) their home over the past two years.

Since May 2022, the number of bird species in Beijing E-Town has risen from 306 to 321m with new arrival such as the Red Crossbill, Chinese Sparrowhawk, Pale Martin, Hair-crested Drongo, Pallas's Rosefinch, Meadow Pipit and the Mongolian Sky Lark.

In 2021, Beijing E-Town initiated a biodiversity baseline survey which revealed that the area has a relatively rich biodiversity containing immense ecological value. The investigation not only clarified the baseline status of biodiversity in the area and established a baseline database, but also educated the public about the rare flora and fauna discovered during the survey, especially the representative local species. This has inspired public awareness and enthusiasm for biodiversity conservation.

In 2023, the second phase of the biodiversity baseline survey began and hotspots in E-Town like Nanhaizi Park, Milu Park, International Enterprise Cultural Park, E-Town Riverside Park, and Majuqiao Wetland Park, were selected as the fixed monitoring sites. Utilizing advanced technological equipment such as artificial intelligence monitoring, E-Town conducted dynamic monitoring to understand the changes in biodiversity and ecological value in the region.

Over the years, Beijing E-Town has consistently upheld green ecology as the defining feature of the area, accelerating the construction of a "garden city". In the future, the E-Town will continue to expand the application scope of ecological value assessment results while conducting related science popularization activities to the public for introducing ecological protection and biodiversity.
